The week started off at Riddling Widow: a little spot on Macdougal Street thats filled with bubbly like you would not believe. Enter through the red door and you will find yourself in the midst of an ever changing sparkling wine menu created by Tanner Walle, the Beverage Director. Here Billecart-Salmon hosted an intimate tasting for those in the industry who, like myself know and love this Champagne House. We started off with the Rosé which is always one of my favorites as it boasts aromas of wild strawberry, ripe raspberry and is balanced with beauty and effervescence. I had the fortune of trying a few others from the collection including a unique oak driven Champagne: Brut Sous Bois which is made from three Champagne grape varieties. I happened to really fall in love with this one, and would absolutely recommend trying it! I also tasted through the 2006 Vintage which was stunning and bright. This wine is everything you would expect from Billecart-Salmon… especially a vintage. Last but certainly not the least is a sweeter and more playful Champagne Demi-Sec, which for those who love something with some noticeable sugar, or to simply end a meal, then this wine is certainly for you.
After that lovely intimate tasting, NY Champagne Week founder Blaine Ashley had more in store for the trade and industry folk like myself. We headed over to Corkbuzz on 13th street for a Grower’s Champagne tasting to kick off the bubble filled week that everyone including consumers were about to experience. Friends and colleagues gathered at one of the hottest wine bars in the city and tasted through some fantastic Champagnes that are more on the boutique style… and or lesser known but still wonderful and quality driven.
Come mid-week was the official US Launch of Champagne Piaff. Burgers and Bubbles are the best combination and with burgers from Jeepney, NYC you could not go wrong pairing wise. This Filipino Gastropub is a hot spot in NYC and they won the Battle of the Burger from Time Out NY’s event this past season. This slightly spicy and oh so juicy burger was packed with flavor and complimented the Piaff Brut and Rosé very well. Nothing beats burgers and bubbles, and hopefully we will see Piaff on some great wine clubs, however if you do want to taste it this season and beyond, you can order from the website and have it delivered to your door!
