New York City is where you can find just about every type of cuisine imaginable. Burke and Wills is where you will find some awesome Australian cuisine in the Upper West Side. Kangaroo Loin and the “Roo” Burger are just some of the enticing and unique menu offerings you will find here.
Kangaroo is gamey but delicious and for “newbie” kangaroo meat eaters, I recommend trying the burger. If you want to try the Kangaroo Loin however, it is lean and delicious and worth trying! I started off with one of the best small plates on the menu: Braised Short Ribs with celery root, hen of the woods (mushroom), and truffle jus. I recommend pairing this with the Old Fashioned cocktail which they mix and pour out of a keg due to it’s popularity. For wine lovers, start with the house Shiraz with this dish… it’s a very delectable pairing!
After came the infamous Roo Burger, cooked medium rare and topped with Pickled Onions, Tomato Jam and “Triple Fried Chips” aka Steak Fries. The fries are out of this world, delicious and the tomato jam and onions make the burger that much more perfect. I am a lamb lover (as i’m sure you may have noticed from all my lamb posts) so the Australian Lamb Duo was another must order for the evening. Accompanied by Butternut Squash Puree and Trumpet Royale Mushrooms, this lamb duo is delightful and very filling.
The menu here is seasonal, the staff is friendly and the ambiance is quite enjoyable. You enter through the bar area where the drinks are flowing and you can browse some delicious bar bites for around $5.00. An incredible happy hour awaits you, but if you want dinner you are led to a back dining room with a skylight roof and completely different ambiance. Very party in the front, business in the back kind of restaurant and the beauty is that you do not hear any of the bar noise or music. It’s almost two restaurants in one and very pleasant. The back dining room has wrapped around large booth seating, table cloths and is great for a more serene dining experience. This is perfect for large groups, business meetings and romantic dinners.
Seeking Australian cuisine? Curious to try some Kangaroo? If so, head to Burke & Wills for one delectable experience!
