At the top, high above the busy streets of the Garment District, NYC, Castell is a refined escape from the hustle below. Sitting atop the new acclaimed AC Hotel New York Times Square is this fantastic rooftop spot!
Castell is a relaxed retreat from the classic overcrowded rooftops with “well drinks” and small bites. They have a classic cocktail program grounded in NYC history, modern décor, elevated service, and stunning Manhattan skyline views. I had the pleasure of spending a Sunday evening here where I enjoyed a number of their cocktails and small plates.
The service is fast and attentive, and there is a lot of seating. This is more of a rooftop lounge, so it’s great for groups and small party rentals. I started out with a Whiskey Buck from the high ball menu. It was refreshing on a hot summer Sunday and went down very easily! Alongside I also chose a big and strong cocktail, The Smoked Manhattan, which was nice and bold. Paired with these were a number of small plates including the Ahi Tuna Tartare, Tomato, Parmesan Cheese and Ibérico Ham Toast, Crispy Sea Salt Potatoes, and Shrimp Cocktail.
These paired very well with the cocktails and atmosphere. The views are just amazing here at Castell and the food is fresh and delicious. They have a great variety of small plates that are generously portioned and flavorful. The Ahi Tuna Tartare was one of my absolute favorite dishes, with mango-soy dressing and toasted country bread. This dish, as well as the Iberico Ham Toast, also paired perfectly with the West Side cocktail. If you’re into some larger plates, the Flatiron Steak comes with crispy potatoes, which are addicting and delicious. Everything here I think is a good share-able option, so I think for couples, groups, and large parties you will be happy ordering a bunch of plates, toasts, and tastes, and sweets to share; after all, isn’t that the best way to eat!?
Castell is known for Martini’s and has a nice selection of martini options if you’re into them. I tried a Dirty Martini which I requested “very dirty” since I am slightly addicted to olives. The bartenders here make one heck of a martini, and this one is made with Olive-Fat-Washed Aylesbury Duck Vodka
EVO, and Manzanilla Olives. If you’re more into gin, I absolutely recommend their Signature Gin and Tonic, which is their G&T made with Hendrick’s Gin and Fever Tree Tonic Water and is more of a Mediterranean Tonic.
If you’re seeking a new rooftop hang, and want to have a great time with awesome views, head to Castell Rooftop Bar and Lounge. This is now one of my top spots to have a great drink and some delicious bites in NYC!
